Film Studies
Program Description and Introduction
Film will provide opportunities for students to apply critical thinking skills in order to make sense of the multitude of images they are exposed to in a society where visual expression is rapidly developing and expanding. Because adolescent learners tend to be passive consumers of visual images, this course is intended to expose students to a variety of film, television and video formats. They will engage as active participants in various forms of visual media. Students will experience a variety of roles including acting, directing, filming, writing, editing, critiquing and viewing.
General Learner Outcomes
There are five predominant goals in Film Studies:
1. To provide experiences that will foster the development of self-expression, creativity and communication through film/media.
2. Understand and become literate in the language of acting, directing and producing and critiquing film/media.
3. Be aware as viewers of social, cultural and historical forces that are reflected by film and visual media.
4. Engage in purposeful work and construct meaning. Learners accept responsibility and ownership for learning as well as develop an interest in learning in film/media.
5. Be aware of career possibilities in the film/communications industry.
All students in Explorations in Film will work within the following disciplines throughout the school year:

6. Technical Theatre
7. Movie Production

Program Summary

Students will experience the film makers journey from concept to completion of a silent movie. Students will experience a variety of roles including acting, directing, filming, writing, editing, critiquing and viewing.
