Essential Questions
Jada Kiss argues that most violent lyrics are for entertainment and
should not be taken literally, much like action movies are accepted as fantasy. Does all violent imagery (action movies, hip-hop vid- eos, news clips) feel the same to you? What is the line between violent imagery and entertainment?
Should artists create Socially Responsible art? Why or why not?
Are artists of all ethnic backgrounds held to the same standards when it comes to creating responsible art? Where might those differing expectations come from?
Music that Matters Assignment - Music Video Project
This is a partner assignment, although you may need more talent. One director & one camera operator. Both do the key – grip roles/ shot list/ script development. Listen to some music. Choose a song that speaks to the human experience as you understand it. Choose a song that analyses society, or expresses a voice not normally heard from in mainstream society or speaks to an issue that you believe in. Import the song into imovie. Create a music video to compliment the message of the song you choose.
Challenge Option: Write your own music or write your own lyrics, or both. Get the a paper copy of the lyrics.-for a rewrite. Record it and mix in the music in garage band.
NOTE: All media used in this project is used for the sole purposes of education.
Time: No less then 30 seconds no more then 2 minutes and 30 seconds.
RESEARCH:
1. If you could respond to the writers of this song,
what would you say?
2. What statement or image made the strongest impression on you?
3. Brainstorm ideas that compliment the music - choose a theme
4. List films, pictures and stories that compliment the theme
5. Write a concept MEDIA RESEARCH: Read Dick Teach and Read Dick's Conceptuals - remember they are unedited....
6. Film using a variety of shots
7. Music videos have a beginning, middle and an end.
8. Mix video footage with shots of someone singing the song/making the music, found footage, a drama, a journey.
9. Then edit the video and audio sounds together.
Must have a complete storyboard, approved by the instructor, before you can begin.
The storyboard must be extremely detailed, with every change in action and camera angle photographed in detail. It will include an audio/script outline. When you present your storyboard you will also present your concept. Your concept can be a verbal presentation, you are allowed to have notes. You should explain the message of song and message of video and point out 10 or 12 symbolic moments - each group member should come up with 5 or 6 moments. Your video plan needs to include use of titles, effects, impression. Once approved you will not be allowed to deviate in any way from your storyboard and your concept. If you do, you will receive a mark of zero for the project.
Storyboard will include digital pictures that correspond with your detailed shot list/ action outline.
